THE TRAIN STATION

Where they start and stop!

Bicycling In The New River Valley...................................

So many of our cycling rides start in the parking lot of this Train Station - it seems to have become a pivotal point in our biking group's rides.  I have seen as many as 22 cyclists meet right here at ride time and ready to roll.

The first night I rode with the group I now ride with, we met at The Train Station and I must admit, they had no sympathy for me.  The 'New Guy' shows up so they take him to the top of Little Walker Mountain, just like that!  No mercy!  As we started back down, one of the riders said, "Last one down buys the milk shakes!" (with anticipation that I would have to buy I'm sure).   No sooner had the words left his mouth, he threw a chain which delayed his decent so he had to buy a round of shakes for everyone at "Sonic Drive In".  The Sonic has become a favorite stop after a hot Summer ride.

This group is more courteous to Newcomers now - we've employed a 'no one dropped' policy and we always stop along the way to allow everyone time to regroup.  When someone shows for the first time we often choose a less aggressive ride and one which is as level as it gets in Pulaski County - it's called the "Cox Hollow" route.  Read about it and others by clicking on this "Rides" link or the "Favorite Rides" button above.  The goal is that all riders leave the parking lot together and return at the same time to visit and talk about the ride.  Visit our Bulletin Board frequently to know when rides are forming - better still, become a subscriber and receive a personal e-mail as posts are submitted.

Now that the New River Trail Extension is completed, some of our rides depart the Train Station and include a pleasant ride on the NR Trail.  The NR Trail Extension was completed in May, 2008.  Now one can access the NR Trail from the Train Station and ride to Galax as we are now connected.  Enjoy the Trail, it's a great way to see beautiful New River and the New River Valley.
